A waterproof jacket is only as waterproof as its seams. At Texpro, we seal and test waterproof jackets in our own factories in Savar, Dhaka, and produce 50,000–100,000 seam-sealed jackets a month for workwear, safety and outdoor brands in the USA, Canada and Europe.
This article explains how we do it: the tapes we use, how the sealing is done, and how we test for waterproofness in-house.
Why seam sealing matters
Every stitch makes a small hole in the fabric. On a waterproof jacket there are hundreds of them along the shoulders, sleeves, hood and pockets, and rain finds its way through each one.
Seam sealing closes these holes. A waterproof tape is bonded over the stitched seam with heat and pressure, so the seam becomes as waterproof as the fabric itself. Without it, even a high-quality waterproof fabric will leak at the seams.
Our seam-sealing process
We match the tape to the fabric, because the wrong tape can peel or leak even when the machine settings are right.
| Fabric type | Tape we use |
|---|---|
| 3-layer laminates (breathable membranes) | 3-layer seam tape |
| 2-layer and 2.5-layer fabrics | 2-layer / 2.5-layer seam tape |
| PU- and TPU-coated rainwear and hi-vis | PU / TPU coated seam tape |
| Buyer's own specification | The buyer's nominated tape brand |
How a jacket goes through sealing:
- Planning: we confirm the fabric, tape and seam layout with the buyer's tech pack before bulk cutting.
- Sewing: the jacket is sewn with the seams prepared for taping.
- Sealing: our automated seam-sealing machines bond the tape over each seam with controlled heat and pressure.
- Checking: sealed seams are inspected and tested for waterproofness (next section).
- Storage: trims, fabric and finished goods are kept in our climate-controlled dry room, which protects them from moisture.
How we test: in-house hydrostatic testing
We have our own hydrostatic testing machine, so we can check waterproofness in our factory instead of waiting for an outside lab.
A hydrostatic test presses water against the fabric and seams with rising pressure and records the point where water comes through. It shows whether the fabric and sealed seams meet the waterproof level in the buyer's specification.
Testing in-house lets us catch problems early, during sampling and during bulk production, while there is still time to adjust the tape or the sealing settings.
